Student Pass Singapore: Step-by-Step Guide for International Students

A practical, step-by-step guide to applying for a Singapore Student Pass (formerly known as a student visa) — including required documents, ICA procedures, and key timelines.

Student Pass Singapore: Step-by-Step Guide for International Students

What Is a Singapore Student Pass?

A Student Pass (formerly called a student visa) is a document issued by the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) of Singapore that allows international students to study full-time at a registered educational institution in Singapore.

All international students studying full-time at a private education institution (PEI) in Singapore — including Brentvale College International — must hold a valid Student Pass.

Who Needs a Student Pass?

You need a Student Pass if you are:

  • A non-Singapore citizen or permanent resident
  • Enrolled in a full-time course at a registered private education institution
  • Aged 18 or above (students under 18 may be on a Dependent's Pass)

Step-by-Step Application Guide

Step 1: Receive Your Letter of Offer

Before applying for a Student Pass, you must first receive a Letter of Offer from BCI confirming your enrolment. This letter is required for the Student Pass application.

Step 2: Register on SOLAR

The Student's Pass Online Application & Registration (SOLAR) system is the official platform for Student Pass applications. Your school will typically submit the application on your behalf.

Visit: www.ica.gov.sg/solar

Step 3: Prepare Required Documents

  • Valid passport (minimum 6 months validity)
  • Completed application form (eForm 16)
  • Recent passport-sized photograph
  • Letter of Offer from BCI
  • Academic transcripts from the past 2 years
  • Financial proof (bank statements showing sufficient funds)
  • Medical examination report (if required)

Step 4: Pay the Application Fee

The application fee is SGD 30 per application. This is non-refundable.

Step 5: Await ICA Processing

Processing time is typically 4–6 weeks. You will receive an In-Principle Approval (IPA) letter by email if your application is successful.

Step 6: Collect Your Student Pass

Upon arrival in Singapore, you must visit the ICA Building to collect your Student Pass. Bring your:

  • IPA letter
  • Valid passport
  • Disembarkation/Embarkation (D/E) card

Important Notes

  • Apply early: Submit your application at least 2 months before your course start date
  • Medical insurance: All Student Pass holders must be covered by a medical insurance policy
  • Renewal: Student Passes must be renewed annually; BCI will assist with renewals
  • Travel: Inform ICA if you plan to travel outside Singapore during your studies
